Sir Walter Bodmer

Emeritus Professor, University of Oxford A pioneer of Human Genome Research & a world-leading cancer researcher

Sir Walter F. Bodmer, Emeritus Professor at the University of Oxford, is a leading figure in human genetics and oncology, with 700+ publications and 80,000+ citations. He trained under Sir R. A. Fisher at Cambridge and became Professor of Genetics at Stanford University before returning to the UK as Oxford’s first Genetics Professor and later Director General of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Knighted in 1986, he pioneered discoveries in the HLA system, mapped the APC gene linked to colorectal cancer, and led the People of the British Isles Project. His recent research focuses on colorectal cancer and cancer immunotherapy. Prof. Bodmer is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a member of the US National Academy of Sciences.

Prof. Dr. Syed Md Akram Hussain, MBBS, FCPS, FRCP, FACP, is a leading oncologist in Bangladesh, currently chairing the Oncology Department at Bangladesh Medical University. With 25 years of experience, he has worked in various hospitals both locally and internationally. His credentials include degrees and fellowships from prestigious institutions such as the National Cancer Institutes in Bangkok and South Korea, Tata Memorial Hospital (India), FRCPs from Glasgow and Edinburgh, FACP (USA), MRCR (UK), and training from world-class centres like Harvard University and the German Cancer Research Institute.

Dr. Ferdousi Qadri

Emeritus Scientist, ICDDR,B

Dr. Firdausi Qadri, an international scientist at the Centre for Vaccine Sciences in International Centre for Diarrheal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b), has been working in collaboration with international and national organizations on research related to infectious diseases and vaccine development over the last 25 years. She and her team devote their time in conducting research on diarrheal pathogens, such as Vibrio cholerae and enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) so that vaccines can be formulated to save the lives of children suffering from diarrheal diseases. Emphasis has also been placed on understanding the immune response in H.pylori-infected people in Bangladesh and patient responses to typhoid fever and vaccines. Intensive research has been carried out in the field of enteric diseases, specifically in the areas of immunology, genomics, proteomic technology and diagnostics, and vaccine development.

Dr. Sharif Akhteruzzaman

Dr. Sharif Akhteruzzaman is a professor and the former chairman of the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, University of Dhaka. He has been serving the University at many different capacities since he joined the university. Currently he is also working as the Director of the Biotechnology Research Centre, University of Dhaka. He published more than 85 research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He also authored a book titled "বিচার ব্যবস্থায় ডিএনএ প্রযুক্তি". He is the recipient of Bangladesh Academy of Sciences Gold Medal Award-2015 for his outstanding contribution in the field of Biological Science.

Dr. Renzo R. Guinto is an Associate Professor and the Lead of the Planetary-Health Initiative at Duke-NUS Medical School in Singapore. His work lies at the intersection of public health, environment, and sustainable healthcare systems. He advocates for integrating planetary health perspectives into cancer prevention and treatment strategies.His innovative approach bridges medicine, policy, and environmental science for a healthier future.

About UNESCO Participation Program 2024–25

Under the UNESCO Participation Program 2024-25, the Department of Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology at the University of Dhaka is implementing the project titled “Understanding the Gaps in Cancer Education and Awareness in Bangladesh and Finding Prospective Solutions: A Special Emphasis on Stigmas and Challenges among Women.” A dedicated initiative, the Cancer Education and Awareness Campaign in Bangladesh (CEAB), has been established to coordinate related events and activities.
